First thing, do not go to the regular download area on Microsoft. The reason; if you select free upgrade from this area the following screen will assume that you want to buy a brand new computer that carries the Windows 10 operating system.
Remember you already have a computer, all you need (if you qualify) is the free upgrade to Windows 10 operating system.
Enter the Upgrade area here. Click this link.
Here is a screen shot of the site.
On how many devices can I get the Upgrade on?
On the site there is a Windows 10 upgrade tool, called Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
The tool has 2 main functions :
Option A - Upgrade to Windows 10 Using the Tool. Before the download begins you are asked what you want to do? You get two options. See the image below.
So either Upgrade this pc now, or create installation media for another pc.
Choose the 2nd option if you will be upgrading more than one device.
This is necessary if you have more than one device that qualify for the free upgrade and you need to install or reinstall Windows 10 using a USB or DVD.
How to do it.
If you’re using a USB flash drive or a DVD, insert it into the device you want to upgrade and then run setup.exe.
Once the upgrade starts, remove the USB flash drive or DVD before the first time the installation restarts your device. If you don’t, the device will boot from the media again and will restart the whole installation process.
If you created an ISO file, move the ISO file to that device, mount it, and then run setup.exe.
Follow the instructions to finish upgrading to Windows 10.
Some Concerns “I have Windows 8.1 update, and if I upgrade to windows 10 what is going to happen to my data or apps?" The media creation tool got you covered.
On the second screen you get to choose what app to keep. Please take a look at the screen shot below.
You are given three options choose the one that fits you.
Option B- Perform a Clean Installation Using USB or DVD.
Danger! Do not attempt to a 'Clean Installation' without first Upgrading to Windows 10.
Why? " If you want to upgrade to Windows 10 for free, follow the instructions in the Upgrade to Windows 10 using the tool section. If you have not upgraded to Windows 10 yet and perform a clean installation, you’ll need to enter a qualifying product key for Windows 7, Windows 8.1 or Windows 10 or buy a license in order to activate Windows 10.
Genuine license
Before you can upgrade to Windows 10 for free, your current version of Windows must be activated with a genuine license. To make sure it’s activated follow this direction:
From Start, search for File Explorer and select it from the search results.
Press-and-hold or right-click This PC and select Properties.
Your Windows activation status is listed at the bottom.
Conclusion
If you only want to upgrade one device click the Upgrade Now button at the top of the screen, or on the Media creation tool. If you have more than one device, choose the media creation tool and select “create your own installation media for another pc.” Save it to either on USB flash or to a DVD.
